Ready for Anything

Those of us who have been in love with essential oils for a long time basically use our oils for everything and cannot even imagine a day without using them.

Recently I was speaking with someone who is excited to begin exploring and yet isn't really sure about how to use the oils.

This inspired me to share a few fun life hacks with essential oils:

First, the obvious.....

Peeee-ew!

Something stinks! (laundry basket? shoe area? garbage can? pre-teen's bedroom?)

Diffuse Purify oil or even just flick a few drops out of the bottle and onto the carpet, or make a 2 oz. spritzer bottle with 10 drops Purify and fill the rest with water.   This will eliminate odors right away.  Why would you ever want to use toxic air fresheners?

In Zitty City?

Apply Melaleuca oil directly on the breakout.  It works so quickly! You can also make a DIY toner by combining 20 drops of Melaleuca oil with 2oz of witch hazel.  Apply with a cotton ball before bed.

The hdClear foaming facial soap, moisturizer and roll-on are so gentle yet effective

And while we're on the topic of skin, here's my morning face spritzer.

Bugz-be-gone

Simple, safe, effective, and way cheaper than expensive bug sprays!

Ditch the dryer sheets

Have you ever seen those wool dryer balls?  Did you know that they cut your dryer time in half, saving all kinds of money on your electric or gas bill! Adding a few drops of lemon or lavender or any oil of your choice and you can take that money you saved on dryer sheets and reinvest in more oils!

Easy non-toxic home cleaners

In a glass 8oz spray bottle (available at aromatools.com) add 30 drops On Guard and fill the rest with hydrogen peroxide.  Makes a great spray cleaner for countertops, bathrooms, sinks and toilets.

You can also put several drops of OnGuard in a bucket with a cup of white vinegar and fill the rest with water for washing the floors.

I also put about 30 drops of On Guard in a quart sized mason jar and then fill with Baking Soda.  Shake and store for use as a scrubber for cleaning stovetops, sinks, or casserole dishes with stubborn baked on foods.  If you poke holes in an alternative lid, you can sprinkle this same mix on your carpet and let it sit for about an hour or so before vacuuming to kill dust mites.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZ...........

Time for bed! Are your kids resistant? Here are three ways to use Lavender to help them drift off.

1. Start diffusing some lavender and/or frankincense in their room about a half hour before bedtime.

2. In a bowl of hot/warm water, add a few drops of Lavender.  Moisten a washcloth, wring out and lay on the child's face and let them enjoy the warmth and the aroma.

3. Mix one or two drops of Lavender with a tsp. of fractionated coconut oil (or any carrier oil).  Rub on the bottoms of their feet before bed. They will drift off to sleep right away.

Don't worry, be happy

In a mood?  There are so many essential oils and blends that can help with elevating your mood.  Elevation, Balance, Citrus Bliss, Frankincense, Wild Orange and Lemon are some of my favorites.  ALL of the oils in the emotional aromatherapy kit (below) are so powerful for shifting moods.  Try in the diffuser to keep the whole house uplifted or wear as a perfume or cologne and now you are a walking diffuser, helping to raise the spirits of everyone you meet!

Just focus!

Does your child's teacher tell you that he has a hard time sitting still or staying focused in class?  Send him to school with a bottle of InTune Focus Blend roll-on.  Teach him to roll it on the bones behind his ears whenever he needs to.  When I was a Middle School teacher, I would often wear this blend and it would have an effect on the kids just by my walking around the room!

Calm temper tantrums

Diffuse a few drops of Lavender or Peace to create a relaxing environment and help to balance kids' moods.

Keep hands clean!

The New York Times ran an article a couple of years ago about how those anti-bacterial hand sanitizers and soaps have dangerous chemicals and are actually helping to create superbugs.  Not so with essential oils - their chemical make-up is too complex!  Mix about 30 drops of OnGuard in a 2oz glass spray bottle and fill the rest with water.  Shake before each use.  Spray your hands, your kids hands, doorknobs, surfaces.  You'll be protected and smell divine!

Rise and shine!

Have a hard time getting out of bed?  Rub a couple of drops of Peppermint oil on your feet (especially on the big toe) and on your earlobes.  Inhale the oil from your palms.  Rub the rest on your neck and shoulders.  Drop a couple of drops on the floor of your shower and let the hot water create a Peppermint steam. No more need for coffee (but you could join your kids with a cup of Peppermint infused hot chocolate! One drop is all you need!)

Too much heavy lifting?

No household should ever be without Deep Blue Rub!  For those occasional aches and pains from a heavy workout, too much sitting, carrying heavy babies and diaper bags, etc. Deep Blue is going to be your best friend!

Immune system support

As soon as you feel the first signs of anything, rub a few drops of OnGuard on the bottom of your feet, or put 4-5 drops in an empty gelcap and take one capsule an hour.

Owies

Lavender, Frankincense and Melaleuca all support our own body's natural healing response.

Fresh and clean bathroom

Put a few drops of your favorite essential oil inside of your toilet paper roll so that each time the roll spins, more scent will be released!

Make vacuuming fun!

Put a few drops of lemon, grapefruit, citrus bliss or OnGuard inside your vacuum bag or filter for a non-toxic air freshener while vacuuming.

Natural perfume or cologne

Ever feel overwhelmed by someone's strong perfume? Many perfumes contain toxic ingredients. The EPA tested fragrances for chemicals in 1991 and found a list of the following toxic perfume chemical ingredients: acetone, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, camphor, ethanol, ethyl acetate, limonene, linalool and methylene chloride – usually in some combination.  When you wear essential oils as perfume, you're actually receiving health benefits and passing them along to those who smell you!

Just breathe!

Inhale Breathe essential oil right from a drop you rub in your palms.  For seasonal respiratory discomfort, put two drops each of lavender, lemon and peppermint in an empty gelcap and take every couple of hours

The motto of doTerra isn't "We have an oil for that!" for nothing.  I recently heard a story of a guy who was struggling to get the lug nuts off while changing a flat tire on the side of the road.  He sarcastically said to his wife, "Do you have an oil that can change a tire?"  She said, "Actually....." and put a couple of drops of lemon oil on the stubborn lug nut and lo and behold, it moved!

Every day you will discover more uses for the oils.  The best part is that they are right there with you in your home already and you don't have to run out to buy an overpriced cleaner or remedy.

YOU are now ready for anything!

40 uses for the Sunsational Flavors kit

Every summer when this kit is available, I am so excited!  I love using these in cooking, especially! Today I just came across this awesome list of 40 uses for these oils.

Spearmint essential oil (Mentha spicata) has been around in flavorings for gum and toothpaste for years, but it’s more than just a yummy flavor. It’s also useful for digestive support, insect control, and balancing emotions.

Tangerine essential oil (Citrus reticulate) is such a yummy oil, and a great substitute for grapefruit, if you’re avoiding that one. It’s also good for digestion, as well as mood support, and immune support.

Cumin essential oil (cumin cyminum) is great for cooking, digestive health, protects against environmental concerns, adds relief for occasional muscle soreness, and did I mention tastes delish? It’s photosensitive though, and you might wanna avoid during pregnancy.

Dill essential oil (Anethum graveolens) is also great for digestion (are you noticing a trend here? cooking oils = happy belly), and is calming and grounding. Some uses for the Sensational Flavors kit:

soothing and calming

Had a rough day? Need some help to relax and unwind?  Essential oils can be a huge support in your relaxation technique toolbox!

These are some of my favorite soothing oils: Lavender, Serenity blend, Ylang Ylang, Bergamot, Vetiver, Melissa, Geranium, Citrus Bliss, Orange, Peace blend, Cedarwood and Clary Sage.

Here are a few ways that you can use the oils for sleep and relaxation:

  1. Diffusion: Diffuse your favorite soothing oils (listed above) to help you feel calm and relaxed before falling asleep.
  2. Pillow: Place a drop or two of a soothing essential oil blend on your pillow or a stuffed animal.
  3. Relaxing Bath: Add a few drops of one of the oils listed above to a warm bath.
  4. Tea: Add a few drops of Lavender or Roman Chamomile or Bergamot to your favorite herbal tea or just a cup of warm water.
  5. Massage: Mix a few drops of oil with a carrier oil and rub hands, feet, back, etc. Both the person giving the massage and receiving it, will feel soothed by the process.

Making yourself sick cleaning?

More and more people are discovering that many of our health concerns arise as a direct result of living in a toxic environment (cancer, learning disabilities and respiratory problems, to name a few) .  This is such a huge topic encompassing air pollution, contamination of water, as well as consumption of food that is laden with hormones, herbicides and pesticides.

It seems like many don't worry about the risk of cancer or some other disease.  The underlying thought is, "It's not immediately present, so I'm going to pretend like there's no way it will happen to me."

So, here is a more tangible effect of living in a toxic environment that I'm guessing will hit home for many of us in a more immediate way.

Is there anyone else out there who is battling the bulge, wanting to lose those extra pounds? What if I told you that this fat is actually PROTECTING you from many of the toxins that have found their way into your system from air, water, food, medications, perfumes, make-up and alcohol. Our bodies make a valiant effort to flush out these toxins, but especially as we get older and have been asking our bodies to work overtime by exposing ourselves to so many toxic substances, our bodies become unable to flush everything as effectively.  So, those fat cells are helping to envelop the toxins in an attempt to prevent them from reaching your organs. (And they are not always successful, by the way.)

Not only that, but many of the toxic chemicals that we are exposed to, such as parabens, BPAs, phosphates and NPEs, actually throw your hormones out of whack by mimicking your body's natural estrogen.  When your body stores this synthetic estrogen, it throws off the entire hormonal system.  Aside from causing irritability and fatigue, it is one of the main reasons those last 10 pounds are so hard to lose!

So, what if you had less toxins in your system? Yep.  You guessed it. With your hormones balanced, the fat would be metabolized more effectively. The fat could take a vacation from its job of protecting your organs!

I'd like to address an area where we can feel immediately empowered to take control to drastically reduce the toxic load that is taxing our livers, our immune systems and our respiratory systems (again, just to name a few).

Check out the Environmental Working Group's "Hall of Shame."  These are products that have been shown to have very harmful effects and yet most of us are unaware of how much damage we are doing to our bodies by using them.  You will be amazed if you read this article and I guarantee you will want to throw everything straight in the trash. (recycle all of that plastic, though!)

I wonder if you realize how incredibly easy and amazingly cost effective it is to make your own cleaning products!? Who would have ever thought!

GRATITUDE themed DIY

thankyou.jpg

ooh!!! Here's such a FUN idea!!!!

Who is up for a GRATITUDE themed DIY?

(In the American spirit of getting ready for the next holiday even before being fully present for the CURRENT holiday on the horizon.......)

I was just thinking about all of the holidays we have cards for and wondering why, traditionally, people don't usually send cards for Thanksgiving.  Personally, it makes so much more sense to me to take advantage of this holiday's theme in order to send someone a card to tell them what we appreciate about them and how we are grateful for their presence in our lives.

I know that I would be thrilled to receive a card like this!  (especially if it smelled nice! ;-)))))

.....See where this is going?

Here's a chance to give someone a warm fuzzy to offset all of those not-so-nice things that happen to us every day that chip away at our happiness, self-esteem, connection.

We all know that our sense of smell can trigger the emotional center in our brain in such a powerful way. So, by sending your card of appreciation to someone, scented with an essential oil, that message from your heart will have even more of an impact and register even more deeply in their psyche, perhaps even countering several of those negative messages.

Let's have some fun with this idea while doing the easiest do it yourself project that you'll ever do!

Here's what you need to gather:

1. your gratitude/appreciation/thank you cards, whether homemade or store-bought

2. cotton balls

3. essential oils - use your intuition about which ones convey the sentiment you are looking for.  At the moment, I'm huuuuugely into the new Emotional aromatherapy kit and so I am scenting my cards with Cheer, Motivate, Peace, and Passion.  (making a few different batches)

Here's what to do:

1. Put your cards and envelopes in a ziploc bag.

2. Put 5 drops of essential oil on a cotton ball.

3. Put cotton ball in the baggie with the cards.

4. Seal the bag and allow the scent to permeate the cards.

5.  A little closer to Thanksgiving, write your cards to friends, relatives and clients telling them how you appreciate them and how you are grateful for their presence in your life.

6. Know that you are making someone's day.

(Wouldn't it be nice if we all appreciated each other more regularly?)

Hey, btw...... I appreciate YOU! :-)

Feel free to pass this along and maybe we can start an avalanche of appreciation!  Please contact me if you want some help getting started with essential oils. And please share with me which oils you used on your cards and how your people respond!

party faves!

It's party season!  I'm having so much fun sharing the oils with so many people at informal parties.  I've made lots of different dishes to share at these parties, including hummus (with cilantro EO), wassail (yummy warm spiced drink for winter wonderfulness), and lemongrass lavender spritzers (recipe credit to Andrea).  I'm going to include my all-time favorite recipe below.  These power-bites are always such a hit!

Life is busy and is constantly on-the-go. These nutrient packed power bites are great for those days when you just need a little extra boost. Great for on-the-go or as a snack, these power bites made with Wild Orange essential oil will help keep your body full of energy during your busy day.

What You Need:

1 cup finely shredded coconut, divided
1 cup almond butter
1 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup raw honey
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons chia seeds
3 drops Wild Orange essential oil

Directions:

1.  Place all ingredients into mixer except for half cup shredded coconut.

power bites ingredients

2. Add essential oil.

3. Mix until well combined.

4. Roll into balls and coat in the other half cup of shredded coconut.

de-toxify your life

One of my favorite things to share with people in the essential oil classes I teach is my homemade hand spray, made with 20 drops of On Guard Protective Blend in a 2oz spritzer bottle and the rest filled with regular water.  I shake before each use and spray on my hands after pushing a shopping cart or when running for office and shaking lots of hands (oh wait! That was just a dream!)

On Guard is great to diffuse in a room to clean the air.

You can dilute it in a spray bottle to clean doorknobs, telephones and other community surfaces.

You can dilute and gargle morning and night as a protective mouth rinse.

Take several drops in an empty gelatin capsule for added immune support.

Because of the complex chemistry in essential oils, they are offer strong protection.  Plus, instead of compromising your system, like these chemical products do, essential oils fortify your system and enhance your immunity!  It seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it?
