What are essential oils?
Let's start with what essential oils are NOT.
*They are not scented oils
Essential oils are not made by mixing synthetic chemical fragrances into an oil base, like some of those air fresheners that you can buy at the supermarket or drug store.
Many essential oils you can buy at the health food store are either synthetically made, poorly distilled using chemical solvents, chemically adulterated, or diluted with filler oils that could go rancid. They could be toxic, and generally have very little to no therapeutic value.
They may smell nice, but they will not have the therapeutic properties of a high quality essential oil. Synthetic copies cannot duplicate the healing power of a Therapeutic Grade essential oil.
*Essential oils are not a vegetable oil or an essential fatty acid
They are not fish or vegetable oils like flax seed or olive oil.
Essential oils are not greasy and do not clog pores like vegetable oils can.
Essential oils do not oxidize and become rancid over time like vegetable oils.
They have a much more complex chemical structure, giving them many therapeutic properties not found in vegetable oils.
*Essential oils are not the same as flower essences or tinctures
Essential oils are highly concentrated, 50-70 times more potent than dried herbs.
The distillation of the entire plant may produce only a single drop of oil.
It takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce one pound of rose oil.
It takes 6,000 pounds of melissa flowers and leaves to produce one pound of melissa oil
It takes 30 pounds of lavender flowers to make enough oil to fill one 15ml bottle.
Flower essences are very diluted and work on an energetic and emotional level. Essential oils are very concentrated, with a very complex chemical make-up that can have profound mental, emotional and physical health benefits. Due to the high concentration, you only need a few drops to produce the desired effects.
*Essential oils are not drugs.
The FDA has no regulation system in place for any kind of supplement, including essential oils. This means that we are not allowed to make specific "health claims" about the oils.
The fact remains that people have been using essential oils for health purposes safely and effectively since ancient times. More and more lay people as well as doctors are now returning to this ancient wisdom.
There is a lot of scientific research proving the safety and effectiveness of therapeutic essential oils for promoting optimal health, not to mention countless anecdotal references for thousands of years. This wouldn't still be around if it didn't work.
Aromatherapy is part of a holistic approach to health and wellness. It's important to look at overall lifestyle. Rather than attacking symptoms, essential oils work to bring the body into a state of homeostasis, or balance.
They work on entire systems of the body to help promote better health in a holistic way, including helping the body cope more effectively with stress, which is at the root of many modern illnesses. That is not to say that you can't reach for your oils when you have a headache or sore muscles! Our motto isn't "We have an oil for that!" for nothing!
So, what ARE essential oils?
When you rub some basil, rosemary, peppermint or lavender in your hands, or when you squeeze the rind of an orange and a fine mist sprays out you are breaking open these essential oil sacs and releasing the aromatic compounds.
Because the lipid-based structure of essential oil molecules resembles the make-up of our cell membranes, and because of the small size of essential oil molecules, they can pass through the cell membrane.
When applied to the skin, topically, essential oils enter the bloodstream and can reach every cell in the body within 20 minutes, often producing their effect within a few seconds of application.
Essential oils all have incredibly complex chemical profiles. This is why super-bugs are no match for essential oils; they cannot figure out how to adapt. An essential oil may contain hundreds or thousands of chemical constituents, each having a synergistic impact on the therapeutic effects of the oil.
Essential oils transport oxygen and nutrients to the cells. The oxygenating molecules in the oils allow the nutrients to penetrate the cell membrane so they can be assimilated for optimum health.
While herbal medicine can be extremely effective, using essential oils is much easier. You just have to open a bottle! Often, due to the high concentration, you only need one drop. When you consider that the average price of an essential oil is $0.10/drop, using essential oils is extremely cost-effective!
Essential oils can deliver such profound positive health benefits and help to create such balance and wellbeing, physically, mentally and emotionally.
